I remember the day my daughter was born as a standout life defining moment. There is nothing more natural, wild, and emotionally awakening, apart from death, than the birth of a fellow creature. She came into the world, literally bright eyed and bushy tailed, and as she took her first unassisted breath, she was as whole and free as she would ever be. Just like a newborn colt, eaglet, kitten, or trout, she was perfectly purposed through millions of years of natural selection to take her place on the stage of life.
As I sit here visiting her in Cape Town 21 years later, I wish I knew then what I know now. I could have given her so much more of the right stuff, not to mention a far better version of myself. But as we all know, hindsight is 20:20 vision and what is done is done. At least I can still invest in her life to the best of my ability, which is what I believe we all instinctively try to do for our offspring, and for the wellbeing of future generations.
Love is clearly intertwined into the thread of life, much like the DNA double-helix found in every life form, consisting of two interconnected strands. When my two children were born, my life became inextricably linked to theirs – my health and wellbeing would affect theirs and vice versa. This speaks volumes to the interconnectedness and interdependence of everything that makes up the universe – a natural order which we need to understand and tap into. Otherwise, we are a bit like a plant without roots, overly exposed and vulnerable to the environmental forces around us.
My mission is clear – I want to teach my children, and people in general, that it’s from our roots that we grow fruits. It’s time to nurture our extraordinary human natures, which will put us back on the front foot of living and loving, instead of the backfoot of dying and hating. We are now at a point in human history where we can and should come alive by tuning in to our instinctive natures at a physical, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual level. We are not here by accident but thanks to the overcoming life-force within all our ancestors, born to be wild and free.
